  • Science and Religion (Part 1)
Could life have evolved by accident? Are we alone in the universe? These are the questions which have pounded the consciousness of individuals. Plus this no less persistent question: what is the purpose of life? Dinosaurs have come and gone. Modern man—Homo sapiens—has landed on the moon. Satellites map our solar system. New planets are being discovered on a regular basis. New theories proposed. Old ones discredited. Genetics, a new field of study—though not so new—ready to re-invent this singular species: mankind. Men of science and of faith are no further apart as a test tube from a pulpit. ...

  • Human Evolution Timeline: Bible Quote and Science

The human evolution timeline is found recorded in Bible quotes (Book of Genesis). Adam's rib symbolizes the chromosome and is the key to the man ape evolution. In discussing evolution vs creation, many convergences like this one are found.

Someone who holds to the theory of evolution and denies creationism might ask why such an important matter as the creation of human beings would be in a symbolic message rather than in explicit language. And, after all, the Holy Scriptures don`t talk about chromosomes. That is a valid question, which shall be pursued below. First off, the main inter ...

Gene Therapy May Protect Normal Tissues During Radiation Retreatment For Lung Cancer

According to a University of Pittsburgh study presented at the 47th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, Oct. 16 to 20, gene therapy could be used as an agent to protect normal tissues from damage during a second administration of radiation therapy for non-small cell lung cancer. Administration of manganese superoxide dismutase plasmid liposome (MnSOD-PL)

Gene therapy appears to relieve Parkinson's symptoms

Brad Arens believes an experimental gene therapy has offered him a miracle this holiday season: some relief from the steady march of Parkinson's. Arens is one of the first people to get the unproven treatment, in which researchers use a viral shell to deliver a protective gene to brain tissue affected by Parkinson's. The 52-year-old chiropractor from Vista, Calif., thinks the treatment has helped ease some of the symptoms of his disease. "I used to have a shuffling gait," he says. "Now there are times that I can walk almost normally." Arens is part of a pilot study that might lead to therapy that would not just control symptoms of the disease, but repair some of the underlying damage to brain cells, says researcher Roy Bakay at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

  • What on Earth is an Enzyme?

Enzymes are the workers in our body that make everything function, by enabling chemical reactions. All living cells contain enzymes. They are hard to visualize, since they are not something tangible, but they are essential to our bodies and our lives depend on them.

There are many kinds of enzymes, and they do everything from helping us breath to helping begin life at conception. Eighty percent of our DNA code relates to enzymes. But the kind of enzymes discussed here relate to our digestion and the food we eat.

In the process of digestion, the digestive enzymes in our bodies br ...

  • Obesity in America -- The Growing Epidemic!

Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, where women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960’s.

But what is obesity? Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but that’s not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, f ...

  • Aggressive Behaviour Seems To Be Triggered By Early Age Diet

The fact that diet directly affects behaviour is no news, on the contrary, this reality has been perceived a very long time ago, as the old saying "a man is what he eats" proves.

Studies have been performed to ascertain the degree in which this happens. A study of the scientists and researchers from the University of Southern California shows that a lack vitamin B, zinc, iron from the diet during the first years of life seems to influence behaviour later on.

Malnutrition in early ages, shows the study, predisposes to neurocognitive defi ...
