  • Twins - Double The Trouble Or Double The Pleasure? Both!

If You're Having Twins..is it double the headache, or double the joy? Probably both!

    What Causes Twins?
The number of twins is on the increase, probably because of IVF treatment where more than one fertilised egg is placed in the womb.

Of the non-IVF twins, there are two causes:

    1. Two eggs are released during ovulation and both are fertilised by separate sperm - it is possible twins can be fathered by two different Dads! In this case the twins are not identical (even if they have the same Dad!). Non-identical twins are also known as fraternal, they s ...

  • DNAology!
The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a unique molecule. It contains every single piece of genetic information of a person; just like the memory card of a PC, which contains all the data. The major difference between the DNA and the memory card of your PC though is that the microscopic DNA helix can store more data – actually about a thousand times more. So, scientists have got the bright idea of mimicking the DNA’s data-storage secrets for use on your PC’s memory card. This will lead to a more compact data processing and storage circuitry.

In the standard silicon-based chip (which is the ...

    Genetics News:

Genetic testing for breast cancer could benefit minorities

Ten years after the identification of the first breast cancer susceptibility genes so few high-risk minority women have received genetic counseling or testing that the standard methods of calculating risk have not been validated in these groups and the results of genetic testing can still produce surprises.......

Genetics center to launch new genetic-testing initiative

As genetic testing for human disease increasingly moves from the science lab to clinical application, The Pew Charitable announced today that it is making a significant new investment in the Genetics and Public Policy Center to improve the overall effectiveness, safety, and reliability of genetic testing, and to develop and promote recommendations where appropriate. (Medical News Today, 6 July 2005)

New Approach For Genetic Screening For Syndrome Linked To Cardiac Irregularities And Sudden Death

Italian researchers have developed a novel approach for genetic screening for long QT syndrome (LQTS), an inherited disease that predisposes young individuals to cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death, according to a study in the December 21 issue of JAMA. The clinical value of genetic testing has been demonstrated by the evidence that carriers of LQTS mutations lacking QT interval prolongation (certain measurement on an electrocardiogram), who therefore escape clinical diagnosis, have a 10 percent risk of major cardiac events by age 40 years whenever left untreated, according to background information in the article... click link for more info.

  • Faster Hair Growth - its as easy as omega 3
    Copyright 2005 David McEvoy

Most people, and especially good hairdressers and dieticians, know that poor nutrition can make your hair dull and lifeless, as well as affecting its growth. Thus it follows that a good diet can improve the quality of your hair.

Hair is composed of keratin, a type of protein. A single hair begins with a root below the skin and a follicle from which the root grows – the part of the hair that shows is known as the shaft. Melanin, the pigment which gives hair its colour, is produced in the hair bulb at the follicle’s lower end.

    Around 50-100 head h ...

  • The Essential Conflict in Humans is Between our Species Nature and Our Consciousness

The two parts of our beings:

One part of our beings is our DNA-based species’ nature, which includes the elements of our brain activity and awareness that evolved to contribute to our survival in the world and especially, the survival of our unique individual DNA, generation to generation.

The other part is an “accidental” outcome of DNA’s survival activities in the world – Consciousness.

    The nature of consciousness:

Consciousness came about as an “emergent” property from the individual organism’s need to be able to make survival “decisions” moment-to-moment, rather ...
