  • Increase in Solar Radiation and Skin Cancer of Pilots

There has been a recent increase in the past decade of skin cancer among pilots; it is an interesting phenomena. Some say we have only recently noticed this because people are living longer and we are flying more international flights and planes are flying at higher altitudes. If you are a airline pilot or Military pilot check and see if what has been observed relates to your own personal observations.

It has been noticed that more and more people have red faces than before. Especially pilots, bus drivers, construction workers and even a few of us work outside types. It has been obser ...

  • Anti oxidants – Why Its a Must in Your Diet

While oxygen is the key to human survival, it is also responsible for maximum damage to the human body as ‘free radicals’. Free radicals form when oxygen is metabolized or burned by the body for its functions. Free radicals are also produced through environmental pollution and cigarette smoke

Tens of thousands of them are formed everyday in the body. These free radicals travel through the body causing immense damage to the cell structures and causes chronic disease, anti aging as well as other health problems including DNA mutations leading to cancer.

Thankfully the answer to su ...

  • Science and Religion (Part 1)
Could life have evolved by accident? Are we alone in the universe? These are the questions which have pounded the consciousness of individuals. Plus this no less persistent question: what is the purpose of life? Dinosaurs have come and gone. Modern man—Homo sapiens—has landed on the moon. Satellites map our solar system. New planets are being discovered on a regular basis. New theories proposed. Old ones discredited. Genetics, a new field of study—though not so new—ready to re-invent this singular species: mankind. Men of science and of faith are no further apart as a test tube from a pulpit. ...

    Genetics News:

Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research Says Passage of H.R. 810 Critical for Patients and Science Alternative Means of Deriving Stem Cells From Embryos is Unproven and Could Delay or Set Back Benefits of Research

WASHINGTON, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Senate passage of H.R. 810 would be the surest way to bring the humanitarian benefits of stem cell research to millions of Americans suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and many other serious illnesses, a non-profit coalition of 95 patient groups, medical organizations, and academic medical centers said today.

    Scientists create embryonic stem cell

On Monday researchers said they have created a new human embryonic stem cell by fusing an embryonic stem cell to an ordinary skin cell. This means that researchers would be able to receive government funding because the stem cells are not derived from a fertilized egg (embryo). Scientists have promised the possibility of curing many diseases, including diabetes, cancer and Parkinson's. Embryonic stem cells are said to show more promise than adult stem cell because they are easier to make them subdivide (which means you could grow batches of the cells). For more information on stem cells, check out the official National Institutes of Health resource for stem cell research page.

  • Birth Defects and Miscarriages and Infertility

Messing around with a mother’s DNA or the DNA of her baby is one of the things that can lead to a miscarriage and birth defects. DNA tells the baby AND the mother “when to do what”. Need a leg? Then you need some specific event at some specific time. If the part of the DNA that controls legs is either damaged or altered by some environmental chemical, the leg won’t be there. And you can’t add it later. It can only develop at one very specific time.

  • Cats, Dogs, and Cancer

A detection technique called TRAP (Telomeric Repeat Amplification Protocol) used in the early detection of cancer in humans has found its way into the realm of veterinary medicine. This relatively new method of cancer detection allows veterinarians to catch cancer earlier, increasing the likelihood of successful treatment.

The test works by detecting the enzyme telomerase, which helps cancer cells reproduce indefinitely. Telomerase activity seems to be a unique feature of benign tumor cells that have undergone malignant transformation.

Regular cells and cancer cells have some ve ...
