It's Never Too Late to Prevent Osteporosis
Calcium - a key element in the fight (ARA) - Osteoporosis, a chronic disease that results in the deterioration of bone mineral density, affects nearly 28 million Americans -- 2 million of which are men. Despite these staggering numbers, this disease is often preventable. Though osteoporosis has been thought of as a disease that affects mostly women, 5-6 million men are at risk of developing this disease each year and the risks increase with age. This year alone 80,000 men will suffer from hip fractures and one-third of these men will die within a year. It has also been estimated that dir ...

Vitamins that May Affect Hair Growth
Several different vitamin or mineral deficiencies can cause dry hair. To treat dry hair, try taking a multivitamin with 100 percent of the daily value of the essential vitamins. A multivitamin and mineral combination may provide some added coverage for possible deficiencies. It's been shown that too little biotin and pantothenic acid (both B-complex vitamins) can lead to dry hair. Shampoos and hair treatment products commonly contain pantothenic acid (or pantothenol). But evidence supporting the benefits of pantothenic acid for dry hair and hair loss is very weak. Also, some peo ...

Wis. Researchers Lobby Senate on Stem Cell Research
WASHINGTON -- The science of stem cell research got its start at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now, university researchers are appealing to the Senate to lift federal restrictions they say are hampering their effort to develop stem cell therapies for deadly diseases and crippling injuries.
Public views on stem cell research
Bob sends me polls (like this) on whether the public supports stem cell research. Every poll I've seen shows Pres. Bush's position squarely in the majority. He does not need to change it for any political reason. For example, the above poll says that "57% favor federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. So does Pres. Bush. It was Bush who took the initiative in that funding. Bob also sent a Harris poll (from the WSJ, not freely online) that asked: ** Do you think this research [on stem cells from leftover embryos] should or should not be allowed? ** 74% said yes, and agreed with USA law and Bush policy. Such research is indeed allowed under USA law. (I believe that some countries don't allow it.)
Morals, Ethics and Philosophy :: RE: Congressional debate on stem-cell research
Frank Pierce wrote: Actually, Connie, we shouldn't make more of the present ban than it is. We don't have a law forbidding stem cell research in the US, only for government funding for it - minus a few insignificant exceptions. There's plenty of stem cell research going on. California is sponsoring it in very effective ways, both with state funding and tax breaks for biotech firms. But we need it on a national level. Frank

American Diabetes Association Urges Fast Senate Action on Stem Cell Research Legislation S. 471 Will Expand Embryonic Stem Cell Research; Help Advance Search for Better Treatment and a Cure for Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association (the Association) today urged the U.S. Senate to take up and pass the "Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005" (S.471), legislation that would accelerate stem cell research by easing existing restrictions and supporting research that uses embryonic stem cells.

Benefits of Green Tea
Tea and Cancer Prevention Tea drinking is an ancient tradition dating back 5,000 years in China and India. Long regarded in those cultures as an aid to good health, researchers now are studying tea for possible use in the prevention and treatment of a variety of cancers. Investigators are especially interested in the antioxidants-called catechins-found in tea.
1. What are antioxidants?
The human body constantly produces unstable molecules called oxidants, also commonly referred to as free radicals. To become stable, oxidants steal electrons from other molecules and, in the p ...

The future of the Human Species - Part 3: How do we engineer an Earth-like environment?
The process of making an unearthly world more earth-like for the purpose of supporting human life is called teraforming - Steven Wintergerst.
Teraforming Mars is the only way we, humans can live and reproduce thus starting all over again on the red planet. As stated above, teraforming transforms any world unlike Earth into an inhabitable place for humans. Of course we cannot convert another planet, Mars for example, 100% into Earth. However Mars must resemble Earth in the following aspects: 1.Thicken the small existing atmosphere and make it comprise the important gases required for ...

Store Bought Vitamins - Synthetic?
Did you know that most store bought vitamins and minerals are synthetic and are hard on your liver and kidneys? Have you noticed that if you do take store bought vitamins that you switch the brands like switching shampoos? Think about how a cell works. If someone was suffering from scurvy, all they had to do was eat an orange and the body would immediately recover because the cells recognized that copper is the center of vitamin C and that it has all of it's bioflavinoids surrounding it and just one tiny arm of the copper is vitamin C. When you buy synthetic vitamin C, you are o ...
