  • Treating West Nile Virus with High Quality St. John's Wort

West Nile Virus, although new to the U.S., is well-documented. The Centers for Disease Control identifies it as a flavivirus, a member of the Togavirus family. It is closely related to yellow fever and dengue fever. This is important because the Togavirus family are encapsulated viruses, i.e., they are covered with a lipid (fatty) coating.

This is exciting, because it means the virus is accessible to treatment utilizing high quality St. John's Wort (SJW). Several studies have been done on a variety of encapsulated viruses, including herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, parainfluenza vi ...

  • Anxiety
Some degree of anxiety is perfectly normal. We all experience situations where we may feel fear and apprehension. However, there are some people who feel anxious even when there is no discernible cause. In these cases, the anxiety usually becomes overwhelming and may interfere with the normal functioning of one’s life. People who suffer from a debilitating level of anxiety are suffering from an anxiety disorder. Negative emotional patterns, anger, fear, stress and anxiety all contribute to degenerative illness such as cancer, heart disease etc..

    What is Anxiety?

RNA interference (RNAi) mediates gene silencing in many eukaryotes and has been widely used to investigate gene functions. A common method to induce sustained RNAi is introducing plasmids that synthesize short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) using Pol III promoters. Whi ...

A rapid 5'-labeling method of single-stranded DNA/RNA was developed, which is based on the utilization of an adenylated intermediate in the reaction of T4 RNA ligase. This method is commonly useful for fluorescence-, isotope- or biotin-labeling of the 5'-ends ...

Rich Text Editing in Movable Type - somebody pls. hack to make it work in Radio

(SOURCE:Blogzilla - a blog about Mozilla: Rich Text Editing in Movable Type)-Of course it's only a "small amount of code" :-) to get this working in "Radio". I am doing my taxes (deadline for self employment income people like myself is June 15) so I don't have the time! Maybe afterwards? <QUOTE>kurcula.com posted a hack to enable rich-text editing for Movable Type in Mozilla. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but the part about adding the document.write table after the if/else didn't work for me, but the following did, when placed after that <script> block:</QUOTE>

  • Childhood Obesity
Along with the increase of obesity in adult, childhood obesity is on the rise. Around 15.5 percent of adolescents in the United States, aged 12 to 19 are obese. Even more alarming, about 15.3 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are obese. These children are developing Type II Diabetes and high blood pressure at an early age. They are placing themselves at increased risk for heart disease and other obesity-related diseases. Their weight also makes them the target of bullies and children who insult and taunt them about their weight. This can ruin their self-esteem and put them at risk for depressio ...

  • Wake-Up Call

Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 7, 2002

In the first half of May, I went through two remarkable changes. One was physical and the other involved emotional recall.

The physical one was what I thought was flu and a heavy dose of it. It was accompanied by a surreal shivering never experienced before or since. The recall was of a family I knew in my school days more than 20 years ago.

I imagined them not during the school years, when I knew them, but much earlier. I got images of all three children as handsome creatures having just come into this world. I saw t ...

  • Death, Aging, Rejuvenation (Part 2)

    Death

Death. Why it happens? Why do we die? Why do animals die? Why do plants die? What is the need of this? In my opinion mechanism of death was selected during Evolution.

From the position of Darwin's theory of Natural Selection everything, that benefits survival of species and gives advantage in Natural Selection, is preserved in following generations.

Improvements were often left unchanged from the moment of life appearance. Though there could be other ways, certain mechanisms were accidentally selected. These improvements are reproduced in the genome of more complex s ...
