  • THE ETIOLOGY OF DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by relative or absolute deficiency of insulin, resulting in glucose intolerance. It occurs in 4-5 million persons in the United States (approximately 2% of the population). The classic symptoms of diabetes mellitus result from abnormal glucose metabolism. The lack of insulin activity results in failure of transfer of glucose from the plasma into the cells. This situation so called “starvation in the midst of plenty”. The body responds as if it were in the fasting state, with stimulation of glucogenolysis, gluconeogenesis and lipolysis produc ...

  • Building A Better Body, One Brick At A Time
    Copyright 2005 Tom Venuto

The quest to develop a stunningly fit, lean and attractive body is a long, slow journey. It's not something you achieve overnight by popping a few pills or strapping an electric gizmo to your belly.

Which reminds me, did you know that by the time the FTC finally blew the whistle on the electronic ab belt scam, the makers of those "ab zappers" had swindled over $100 million dollars from unsuspecting consumers? Fortunately, some of those companies had to pay it back, and then some! The FTC charged three companies - Fast Abs, Ab Tronic and Ab Energizer - w ...

  • A Call for International Marriage Laws

I recently watched a CNN programme which centred on “kidnapped daughters” (from multicultural marriages) who were unwillingly given away in marriages in Islamic states by their fathers. Usually, the fathers were from these Islamic states. While pondering over why some states still refuse women their rights to choose whom to marry, the key question I am also trying to answer is “Which international law governs inter-country and inter-religious marriages?”

The real issue is whose belief overrides in an inter-country and inter-religious marriage. Should the father dictate the beliefs of ...

New Approach For Genetic Screening For Syndrome Linked To Cardiac Irregularities And Sudden Death
Italian researchers have developed a novel approach for genetic screening for long QT syndrome (LQTS), an inherited disease that predisposes young individuals to cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death, according to a study in the December 21 issue of JAMA. The clinical value of genetic testing has been demonstrated by the evidence that carriers of LQTS mutations lacking QT interval prolongation (certain measurement on an electrocardiogram), who therefore escape clinical diagnosis, have a 10 percent risk of major cardiac events by age 40 years whenever left untreated, according to background information in the article... click link for more info.

  • What Causes Mental Illness?
(NC)-Lots of myths surround mental illness. For instance, many still think that it's something that can be cured simply by 'toughening up' or by adopting a better outlook on life. In fact, mental illness is not caused by 'moral' weakness, and it's clearly not something that people 'choose' to have. Mental illness is a diagnosable illness that requires treatment, just like diabetes.

While the causes of mental illness are not well understood, most research suggests that it results from a chemical disturbance in the brain. Many factors may contribute to this: heredity, genetics, stress, recrea ...
