  • Death, Aging, Rejuvenation (Part 2)

    Death

Death. Why it happens? Why do we die? Why do animals die? Why do plants die? What is the need of this? In my opinion mechanism of death was selected during Evolution.

From the position of Darwin's theory of Natural Selection everything, that benefits survival of species and gives advantage in Natural Selection, is preserved in following generations.

Improvements were often left unchanged from the moment of life appearance. Though there could be other ways, certain mechanisms were accidentally selected. These improvements are reproduced in the genome of more complex s ...

  • Melanin: Aging of the Skin and Skin Cancer

"Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for 90% of the visible signs of aging on the skin of whites," says Dr. Michael J. Martin, former Assistant Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at University of California, San Francisco.

Blacks' skin, however, ages much slower.

Why are most dark-skinned blacks protected from harmful UV rays? Because compared to whites, blacks possess more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.

    Melanin

Melanin offers protection against UV rays for blacks and other dark-skinned people. Conversely, fair-sk ...

  • Health Profiling: Recognizing the Physical Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia is often thought to be related to stress or anxiety, but those are only two of the reasons that this condition might surface. There are numerous physical circumstances that might serve as the catalyst for sleeplessness – some more closely associated to women than men. The bottom line is that, whenever a person deviates from their normal sleep pattern as the result of a lack of sleep, something within their life – or their health profile – has gone awry and needs to be addressed.

Women tend to be the victims of insomnia more often than their male counterparts. This is partiall ...

    Genetics News:

Anti-cancer drugs may hold promise for premature aging disorder
In a surprising development, a research team led by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has found that a class of experimental anti-cancer drugs also shows promise in laboratory studies for treating a fatal genetic disorder that causes premature aging.

An emerging role for PtdIns(4,5)P(2)-mediated signalling in human disease.
Publication Date: 2005 Oct 24 PMID: 16253350Authors: Halstead, J. R. - Jalink, K. - Divecha, N.Journal: Trends Pharmacol SciAlthough an established regulator of many cellular functions, the phosphoinositide phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-bisphosphate [PtdIns(4,5)P(2)] appears to have evaded the attention of drug-discovery companies. An increasing number of reports have identified potential links between PtdIns(4,5)P(2)-mediated signalling pathways and the aetiology of many human diseases. Here, we review current knowledge of the regulation and function of PtdIns(4,5)P(2) and discuss how aberrant PtdIns(4,5)P(2)-mediated signalling might contribute to human pathologies such as cardiac failure, bipolar disorder, channelopathies and the genetic disorder Lowe syndrome.

New clues about brain function in human behavior
Government researchers have discovered a genetically controlled brain mechanism responsible for social behavior in humans -- one of the most important but least understood aspects of human nature. The study compared the brains of healthy volunteers to those with a genetic abnormality, Williams Syndrome, a rare disorder that causes unique changes in social behavior.

  • How To Invite Positive Change In Your Life

Gnothi seauton,, said Socrates. “Know thyself.”

These words remain as true today as in the days when the portly philosopher in his rumpled tunic sauntered through the dusty agora of ancient Athens and pondered aloud about the riddles of the human experience.

“What is man?” he asked. “What can he become?”

This is a fascinating question. Once we set out to know ourselves, we also pave the way to become more authentic and powerful in our lives.

While we may appear predisposed, due to genetics or environmental factors, to certain character traits, we are, as far as I can ...

  • Benefits of Green Tea and Cancer Prevention

    Tea and Cancer Prevention

Tea drinking is an ancient tradition dating back 5,000 years in China and India. Long regarded in those cultures as an aid to good health, researchers now are studying tea for possible use in the prevention and treatment of a variety of cancers. Investigators are especially interested in the antioxidants-called catechins-found in tea.

    1. What are antioxidants?

The human body constantly produces unstable molecules called oxidants, also commonly referred to as free radicals. To become stable, oxidants steal electrons from other molecules and, in the ...
