New Gene Tool May Unlock Root Causes of Disease
Copyright 2005 Daily News Central
Genetic researchers have made substantial advances in understanding the root causes of common diseases and the history of human evolution, according to a series of reports published in scientific journals this week.
Chief among these accomplishments is the work of an international consortium of more than 200 scientists from Canada, China, Japan, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States published in the October 27 issue of the journal Nature.
The team studied DNA samples from four different parts of the world and concluded that gen ...

What Make Us Unique and Different
Starting a business can take a lot of time, money, and energy. And because we don’t want to completely re-invent the wheel, we often want to copy (legally) other techniques, strategies or processes used by others. While copying others has many benefits, namely using tried and true methods as well as saving time and money, the true success of your business will come from your own uniqueness. You are unique, different from each and every other person on the planet. Does Whom You Work With Matter? Effects of Referent Group Gender and Age Composition on Manager's Compensation
Much research has examined gender and age effects on compensation, concluding that a wage gap exists favoring men and negative stereotypes against older workers persist. Although the effect of an employee's gender or age has been widely studied, little work has examined the impact of the demographic characteristics of a focal employee's immediate referent groups on pay. After controlling for a number of human capital variables, results indicated that not only does a wage gap favoring men exist, but also managerial pay is lower when managers' referent groups are largely female, when subordinates are outside the prime age group, and when peers and supervisors are younger.

A Synthesis Of Research On The Causes, Effects, And Reduction Strategies Of Teacher Stress
From the executive summary: Occupational stress has been a topic of significant research for the last few decades, reflecting the detrimental effects of employees. In particular, teacher stress is borne out of the demands on the individual teacher. Strong evidence suggests that many substitute teacher costs are a direct result of teacher stress. The costs associated with stressful occupation can be high in physical, economical, and academic terms. Human Resource Managers can detect the early stages of stress and advocate organizational stress management programs. Research on the causes of, effects of, and reduction strategies for teacher stress are discussed. Stress is a biological phenomena that is experienced by all persons regardless of their socio-economic status, occupation, or age. The paper explores this issue in detail.

The Truth About Halitosis, More Commonly Known As Bad Breath
PART I: THE SCIENCE OF HALITOSIS AND BACTERIA IN YOUR MOUTH Halitosis, also more commonly known as bad breath, is caused by anaerobic producing bacteria which normally live WITHIN the surface of the tongue and in the throat. These bacteria are supposed to be there because they assist with digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucous or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or "broken-down" oral tissue. Under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break down proteins at a very high rate. Proteins are made up of amino acids, two of which (Cysteine and Methionine) are dens ...

Melanin: Aging of the Skin and Skin Cancer
"Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for 90% of the visible signs of aging on the skin of whites," says Dr. Michael J. Martin, former Assistant Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at University of California, San Francisco. Blacks' skin, however, ages much slower. Why are most dark-skinned blacks protected from harmful UV rays? Because compared to whites, blacks possess more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Melanin Melanin offers protection against UV rays for blacks and other dark-skinned people. Conversely, fair-sk ...
