    Routine Genetic Testing For Cancer Risk Not Recommended
    The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends against routine referral of all women for genetic counseling and DNA testing to detect the presence of specific BRCAl and BRCA2 gene mutations that may be associated with breast or ovarian cancers, according to a Sept 5, 2005, news release from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. If a woman has certain specific family history patterns that put her at risk for these gene mutations, however, her primary care physician should suggest counseling and possible DNA testing. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes help control normal cell growth. Women who inherit specific changes or mutations in one or both of these genes have a greater risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer, especially if...

    Screening embryos for genetic diseases during in vitro fertilization offers couples the best chance for a healthy child, but a genetic glitch could potentially cause doctors to misdiagnose a small fraction of them, University of Florida scientists say. Citing concerns about the accuracy of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, the method a number of practitioners use to pick the healthiest embryos during IVF, UF scientists set out to study the procedure. Their work, described during a recent meeting of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, reveals the technique is actually highly reliable. But because there is a slim chance a genetic abnormality can cause doctors to misdiagnose embryos, some concerns still need to be addressed, the scientists said.......

    (SCSA) is a tool for measuring clinically important properties of sperm nuclear chromatin integrity. Chromatin is that portion of the cell nucleus which contains the entire DNA of the nucleus in animal or plant cells.
