  • How To Invite Positive Change In Your Life

Gnothi seauton,, said Socrates. “Know thyself.”

These words remain as true today as in the days when the portly philosopher in his rumpled tunic sauntered through the dusty agora of ancient Athens and pondered aloud about the riddles of the human experience.

“What is man?” he asked. “What can he become?”

This is a fascinating question. Once we set out to know ourselves, we also pave the way to become more authentic and powerful in our lives.

While we may appear predisposed, due to genetics or environmental factors, to certain character traits, we are, as far as I can ...

  • Eating Disorders Do Not Discriminate

    Who suffers from Eating Disorders?

Eating Disorder sufferers are male and female alike. We are of all ethnicity's, religions, and economic backgrounds. We are of all ages, with very different body structures. We can look normal on the outside and yet be suffering terribly on the inside.

Genetics, Psychology, and Media all influence the onset of an eating disorder. Once we get caught in the cycle, some days it seems as though we will never break free. We constantly beat ourselves up, every moment of every hour of every day. If we could just be perfect in some way then we would be o ...

  • Cats, Dogs, and Cancer

A detection technique called TRAP (Telomeric Repeat Amplification Protocol) used in the early detection of cancer in humans has found its way into the realm of veterinary medicine. This relatively new method of cancer detection allows veterinarians to catch cancer earlier, increasing the likelihood of successful treatment.

The test works by detecting the enzyme telomerase, which helps cancer cells reproduce indefinitely. Telomerase activity seems to be a unique feature of benign tumor cells that have undergone malignant transformation.

Regular cells and cancer cells have some ve ...

    Genetics News:

The Genome Browser now displays genetic spans
In an effort to unite the genetic and physical maps, the Genome Browser can now display interpolated genetic intervals (under the "Genetic limits" option). This currently only includes loci that have two-factor mapping data. It works by taking the map positions of all genetic loci - cloned or not - and interpolating them onto the physical map. The range is established using the confidence interval. A secondary consequence of this is that it is now possible to search the Genome Browser for genetic loci like mua-4. Genetic diagnosis using multiple sequence variant analysis
The present invention is in the field of nucleic acid-based genetic analysis. More particularly, it discloses novel insights into the overall structure of genetic variation in all living species. The structure can be revealed with the use of any data set of genetic variants from a particular locus. The invention...

Genetic, Household and Spatial Clustering of Leprosy on an Island in Indonesia: A Population-Based Study
It is generally accepted that genetic factors play a role in susceptibility to both leprosy per se and leprosy type, but only few studies have tempted to quantify this. Estimating the contribution of genetic factors to clustering of leprosy within families is difficult since these persons often share the same environment. The first aim of this study was to test which correlation structure (genetic, household or spatial) gives the best explanation for the distribution of leprosy patients and seropositive persons and second to quantify the role of genetic factors in the occurrence of leprosy and seropositivity.

  • A Look at Microdermabrasion Machines
Microdermabrasion systems are safe for most all skin types. Microdermabrasion systems actually evolved from a process known as dermabrasion. Though effective, especially for serious dermis scarring, dermabrasion is harsh, requiring a metallic re-surfacing tool, anesthesia, and long recovery times. Microdermabrasion systems, however, gently smooth signs of aging, sun damage, and scarring with micro-crystal creams. The beauty of micro-crystal creams is how powerfully they polish the skin, but remains gentle and forgiving.

A special cleansing device circulates a cream, infused with tiny e ...

  • An Introduction to Gastric Bypass Surgery
Obesity, once seen as akin to laziness and overeating, is now understood as a complex disorder having to do with genetics and hormonal as well as lifestyle factors. People seem to have very different energy requirements; some can eat half as much as others and weigh the same.

By some estimates, as many as 20% of Americans are obese with 6-10% classified as morbidly obese (having a body mass index of 40 or greater, or being more than 100 pounds overweight), a health problem with severe consequences that can include hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, ...

Cases of kidnapping and car bombings have skyrocketed in

situation on the ground is rife with violence and terrorism.
