  • What Causes Mental Illness?
(NC)-Lots of myths surround mental illness. For instance, many still think that it's something that can be cured simply by 'toughening up' or by adopting a better outlook on life. In fact, mental illness is not caused by 'moral' weakness, and it's clearly not something that people 'choose' to have. Mental illness is a diagnosable illness that requires treatment, just like diabetes.

While the causes of mental illness are not well understood, most research suggests that it results from a chemical disturbance in the brain. Many factors may contribute to this: heredity, genetics, stress, recrea ...

The Sperm DNA Integrity assay (SDIA) like the Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay

(SCSA) is a tool for measuring clinically important properties of sperm nuclear chromatin integrity. Chromatin is that portion of the cell nucleus which contains the entire DNA of the nucleus in animal or plant cells.

The results correlate well with the potential of sperm from a given male to produce embryos that would be sufficiently “competent to produce a live birth. The SDIA utilizes the metachromatic features of acridine orange (AO), a DNA probe, and the principles of flow cytometry (FCM).

    Genetics News:

Doctor uses genetic markers to help adults
A new genetics lab and program at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City aims to help the adults who have birth defects.

    Estimating Frequency of Birth Defects
Among the 18 major birth defects studied, orofacial clefts (cleft lip and cleft palate) were the most common birth defect in the United States, affecting an estimated 6,800 infants annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates released in its journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Major birth defects are conditions that are present at birth and have a serious, adverse impact on health, development or functional ability........

Paxil, A Multiple Offender Drug, Now May Cause Birth Defects
WebMD is reporting that the FDA, based on a new study of Paxil, now warns that the antidepressant may be associated with birth defects. The warning is directed particularly at women taking Paxil in the first trimester. GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Paxil, says it will include the results of the study in the list of precautions for the drug. A retrospective study found increased numbers of babies born with birth defects to women who were taking Paxil during the first trimester of pregnancy, as compared with women on other antidepressants, according to the FDA and the company. Paxil has created concerns before.

Micro-molecule plays big role in birth defects
GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- University of Florida researchers have learned how to selectively shut down a flyweight-sized genetic molecule that packs a heavyweight punch, a discovery that may help doctors better understand cancer, birth defects and other health problems.

  • Understand the Science of Obesity And You're On Your Way To Conquer It

Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but that's not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, fat and water. An obese person has a surplus of body fat. Body Mass Index (BMI) is commonly used to determine if a person is obese or not. A person with a BMI over 30 is considered to be obese, and a BMI over 40 is considered to be severely obese.

Factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics and certain medical disorders cause obesity, but it can be conquered.

Calcium - a key element in the fight

(ARA) - Osteoporosis, a chronic disease that results in the deterioration of bone mineral density, affects nearly 28 million Americans -- 2 million of which are men. Despite these staggering numbers, this disease is often preventable.

This year alone 80,000 men will suffer from hip fractures and one-third of these men will die within a year. It has also been estimated that dir ...
