  • Twins - Double The Trouble Or Double The Pleasure? Both!

If You're Having Twins..is it double the headache, or double the joy? Probably both!

    What Causes Twins?
The number of twins is on the increase, probably because of IVF treatment where more than one fertilised egg is placed in the womb.

Of the non-IVF twins, there are two causes:

    1. Two eggs are released during ovulation and both are fertilised by separate sperm - it is possible twins can be fathered by two different Dads! In this case the twins are not identical (even if they have the same Dad!). Non-identical twins are also known as fraternal, they s ...

  • The Honeybush Miracle.
Perhaps a little eclipsed by the world-wide success of Rooibos, another natural South African health tea, Honeybush; is finally getting the attention it deserves.

Honeybush tea ( botanical name: Cyclopia intermedia ) grows along mountain slopes in the Cedarberg and Langkloof area, and has a naturally sweet, almost honey-like taste. Its brewing colour is a pinky red. South Africa produces only 200 tons of Honeybush tea per year. Not much when compared to the annual Rooibos tea crop of around 4000 tons. This lesser known tea has, however, apparently plenty to offer.

Just like the ever popu ...

  • Male Mid-Life Crisis

Men notice that their former youthful exuberance and ravenous virility are slowly diminishing when they reach the age of 40 and onwards. This is when males experience hair loss, bone loss, insomnia or other sleeping problems, and problems with memory and calculation.

They often feel cranky, fatigued, and less motivated. Or sometimes these are accompanied by sweating and flushing, loss of muscle mass and strength, aches and pains, increased fat, decreased sexual performance or erectile dysfunction, and depression.

Most men who reach midlife will basically experience one or all of ...

    fMRI detects Gene Expression

Carnegie Mellon scientists develop tool that uses MRI to visualize gene expression in living animals Ahrens' new approach uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to monitor gene expression in real-time. Because MRI images deep tissues non-invasively and at high resolution, investigators...

Use of tocotrienols for elevating ikbkap gene expression and treating familial dysautonomia

The present invention provides methods for elevating IKBKAP gene expression and the level of functional IKAP protein in cells, which are beneficial to human individual, such as an individual suffering from Familial Dysautonomia, by providing one or more tocotrienols alone or in combination with one or more tocopherols to the...

PAGE: phase-shifted analysis of gene expression.

Publication Date: 2005 Dec 1 PMID: 16322047Authors: Leung, E. - Bushel, P. R.Journal: BioinformaticsSUMMARY: Grouping of gene expression patterns across biological experiments, treatments and time series data is performed in q-intervals of measurements using phase-shifted analysis of gene expression (PAGE); a Java-based tool to find clusters of genes which share trends of expression profiles within the dataset. The patterns and genes within q-Clusters are visualized in trend plots and compared to determine biological relevance from the gene annotations. AVAILABILITY: PAGE and supplemental material are available at http://dir.niehs.nih.gov/microarray/software/page/.

  • Uses and Benefits of Acetyl L Carnitine
Carnitine Nutrition can play an important role in promoting brain wellness. The older we are, the more likely we are to suffer from cognitive loss. While some survive into their sixth and seventh decades with good mental function, this becomes less likely as we age further. Decline is almost universal in at least one cognitive area among those over .

Certain nutrients have also undergone examination for their role in promoting brain health in older adults. One of the most extensively researched nutrients for its role in promoting brain wellness is Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR). ALCAR has demon ...

  • Store Bought Vitamins - Synthetic?

Did you know that most store bought vitamins and minerals are synthetic and are hard on your liver and kidneys? Have you noticed that if you do take store bought vitamins that you switch the brands like switching shampoos?

Think about how a cell works. If someone was suffering from scurvy, all they had to do was eat an orange and the body would immediately recover because the cells recognized that copper is the center of vitamin C and that it has all of it's bioflavinoids surrounding it and just one tiny arm of the copper is vitamin C.

When you buy synthetic vitamin C, you are o ...

  • Longevity - Can Fat Cells Dictate How Long a Human Survives?
According to the September Issue of Popular Mechanics, a report written by Jim Wilson explains how human beings may some day have the capability to survive to be 180 (one hundred eighty) years old!

Based on research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(http://web.mit.edu/biology/www/facultyareas/facresearch/guarente.shtml) and Professor Leonard P. Guarante; genetic makeup that rules our individual "time-clocks" can be virtually erased.

    * How is this possible?
Every person has DNA fragments dubbed telomeres Our telomeres are specifically designed to extend our live ...
