  • The Causes Of Acne And How To Avoid Them

If you aren't a sufferer of the effects of acne, feel lucky. Acne is one of the most common skin diseases in the United States, affecting some 17 million people.

By definition, it occurs when the pores of the skin are plugged, where the natural oil, called sebum, can't reach the pore's surface.

Doctors believe that it could be the overproduction of sebum that contributes to the clogging of pores, which results in the formation of pimples and zits. All of this occurs especially around the time of puberty, adolescence and even into adulthood.

Problems with severe acne can go ...

    Genetics News:

Fish Gene Sheds Light On Human Skin Color Variation

With help from a common aquarium pet and a recently released online database of human genetic variation, a collaborative team of Penn State researchers has found what could be the most important skin color gene identified to date. The team found that a change in just one amino acid in one gene plays a major role in determining why people of European descent have lighter skin than people of African descent.

Clue To White Skin: One Gene

The skin color of Europeans may have turned white after their ancestors migrated from Africa because of a single mutation among the 3 billion genetic "letters" that make up the human genome, scientists reported ...

Human Gene Changes Color of Fish

New study sheds light on skin color variations.

Consistent Image-Based Measurement and Classification of Skin Color

Little prior image processing work has addressed estimation and classification of skin color in a manner that is independent of camera and illuminant. To this end, the paper first presents new methods for fast, easy-to-use image color correction, with specialization toward skin tones, and fully automated estimation of facial skin color, with robustness to shadows, specularities, and blemishes. Each of these is validated independently against ground truth, and then combined with a classification method that successfully discriminates skin color across a population of people imaged with several different cameras.

    Human Skin Color Gene Discovered

The BBC reports that researchers at Penn State Uni have discovered the gene responsible for skin pigmentation in humans. The gene SLC24A5 hadn't previously been identified with skin pigmentation before but research into the differences between regular zebrafish and the golden zebrafish indicated that a protein deficiency in the gene leads to a mutation, similar to that experienced by albino populations. Interestingly, adding the protein in the golden zebrafish resulted in a darker toned fish. Continue reading "Human Skin Color Gene Discovered"

Could life have evolved by accident? Are we alone in the universe? These are the questions which have pounded the consciousness of individuals. Plus this no less persistent question: what is the purpose of life? Dinosaurs have come and gone. Modern man—Homo sapiens—has landed on the moon. Satellites map our solar system. New planets are being discovered on a regular basis. New theories proposed. Old ones discredited. Genetics, a new field of study—though not so new—ready to re-invent this singular species: mankind.
