  • Fantasy Football Explodes into Fiction

Fifteen years ago, my friends and I wanted to get involved in fantasy sports. We had heard of Rotisserie baseball, the game where you select major leaguers and use their statistics for your own fantasy team. Most of us preferred football over baseball, so we did a little research and decided to create a fantasy football league. Now, we're entering our 16th season, with 20 of the most rabid football nuts anywhere, competing for pride and a small monetary prize each year.

We're not alone, of course. Over 15 million Americans play fantasy football, a game that uses the statistics of prof ...

  • Why Are We So Fat? The Real Reason For The Obesity Epidemic
    Copyright 2006 Tom Venuto

Why Are We So Fat? That’s the question asked in the cover story of a recent issue of National Geographic magazine.

“Americans enjoy one of the most luxurious lifestyles on Earth: Our food is plentiful. Our work is automated. Our leisure is effortless. And it’s killing us,” says Geographic senior writer Cathy Newman.

Some of the latest facts and statistics about obesity revealed in the article are chilling:

    * One out of three Americans is obese, twice as many as three decades ago

    * The Center for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) h ...

  • Garlic - Join Me And I´ll Show You Why Garlic Can Save Your Life

Are you worried yet about your health? Are you anxious about your heart, or about the possibility of contracting cancer? If so, you are not alone, and your concerns are quite valid. Cancer and heart disease are today’s major killers, and as of now, we are yet to find a safe and effective drug, that can prevent these diseases. Some will argue that taking one or two aspirins a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, and it saddens me to see how many people are doing this, because I know the problems brought by aspirin over use, if these people knew about the long term damage caused by this ...

Genetic material may aid SARS treatment

WASHINGTON - Small fragments of genetic material that can silence specific genes are showing promise in battling the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Adding amino acids to the genetic repertoire.

Publication Date: 2005 Dec PMID: 16260173Authors: Xie, J. - Schultz, P. G.Journal: Curr Opin Chem BiolConsiderable progress has been made in expanding the number and nature of genetically encoded amino acids in Escherichia coli, yeast and mammalian cells in the past four years. To date, over 30 unnatural amino acids have been cotranslationally incorporated into proteins with high fidelity and efficiency by means of a unique codon and corresponding orthogonal tRNA-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase pair. The incorporated amino acids contain spectroscopic probes, post-translational modifications, metal chelators, photoaffinity labels and unique functional groups. The ability to genetically encode additional amino acids, beyond the common 20, provides a powerful approach for probing protein structure and function both in vitro and in vivo, as well as generating proteins with new or enhanced properties.

  • Powering Up Hand Held Wireless Devices In The Field

Powering up hand held wireless devices in the field for Business Uses, Educational Issues, Monitoring Sensors for Security Purposes or Blue Force Tracking for military troops in the field for net-centric warfare is possible even in the most remote locations can be possible using simple principles which will provide small amounts of energy. There are a few new innovative ways to do this, which appear to have been overlooked. One is to have an inflatable sphere or beach ball with inner reflective skin, which is reflective on the inside, which can take on light waves or UV from the sun or ener ...

  • Alzheimer Disease and Antioxidants

At the present time, one out of ten adults have some form of Alzheimer disease. According to Dr. Greengard, Director of the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research at the Rockefeller University, that number is expected to strike up to three times as many in the coming decades. Alzheimer's is considered a disease of the elderly and with the average lifespan of the US population rising to 74, a solution to the medical problem is being sought.

For Scientists the largest concern is what causes Alzheimer's and how can it be eradicated. For possible victims and their families it is how do we ...

  • DNAology!
The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a unique molecule. It contains every single piece of genetic information of a person; just like the memory card of a PC, which contains all the data. The major difference between the DNA and the memory card of your PC though is that the microscopic DNA helix can store more data – actually about a thousand times more. So, scientists have got the bright idea of mimicking the DNA’s data-storage secrets for use on your PC’s memory card. This will lead to a more compact data processing and storage circuitry.

In the standard silicon-based chip (which is the ...
