National ID Card? Congress Approves Electronic ID Card
Are we moving towards an Orwellian 1984 scenario in the United States? Are we still truly the land of the free? Many are predicting severe limitations to our way of life in light of the impending requirement of a national ID card. On May 10, 2005, Congress approved the “Real ID Act” as part of a military spending bill. President Bush is expected to sign the bill shortly. So, what’s the big deal? Currently, the federal government has no method for tracking citizens within the United States. If you fly to Las Vegas for a week, the government cannot track you without obtaining a wa ...

Well, I suppose we should all be "happier than a pig in a poke". Why? This year marks the first time a man-made object has landed on Mars. Let's see, at last count there were at least two charming little robots ...

Amateur Genetic Engineering
DNA Hack is website for Amateur Genetic Engineering. The site has tons of resources, supplies, how-tos and this interesting snippet from Michael Schrage in the June 2003 Technology Review: "Maybe bathtub biotech will be the next to capture the mindshare of the techie tinkerers. Maybe bioinformatics and the diffusion of genetic engineering technologies will inspire a new generation of bio-hackers. Certainly the technologies are there for those inclinded to genetically edit their plants or pets. Maybe a mouse or E. coli genome becomes the next operating system for hobbyists to profitably twiddle. Perhaps this decade will bring a Linus Torvalds or Bill Gates of bio-hackerdom -- a hobbyist-turned-entrepreneur who can simultaneously innovate and market his or her DNA-driven ideas Via Make
India: Genetic Engineering - Petition Accuses Govenment Over Biosafety Testing
India has approved BT (genetically modified) cotton to be planted in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, but issues of biosafety, it seems, have not been given due attention. Dr. Arpad Pusztai, the scientist who has discovered that genetically modified potatoes caused rats to get sick and was fired for insisting that the study results be made public, has stated in testimony to the Supreme Court of India that we're dealing with "a potentially toxic crop whose anti-nutrients, (toxins such as gossypol, cyclopropenoid fatty acids or the potent carcinogenic aflatoxins, are well-known to accumulate in the subcutaneous fatty tissues of consumers." A Public Interest Petition charges that the Indian government is...

A Cost-Benefit Assessment of Biomass Gasification Power Generation in the Pulp and Paper Industry
This study examines in greater depth and breadth than previous studies the prospective costs and benefits of commercializing black liquor gasification combined cycle (BLGCC) cogeneration systems. The analysis was carried out with guidance from an industry-government Steering Committee, with review by a board of independent experts, and with inputs from many other individuals. The underlying basis for results obtained in this study are detailed engineering designs, capital costs, and operating costs for "Nth plant" BLGCC and Tomlinson cogeneration systems the authors developed in consultation with equipment developers, industrial design engineers, pulp and paper industry experts, and a variety of others.

Are Things Hopeless?
On its face, judging from what we get in the media, it would seem our world is spiraling into the abyss. Putting aside that “doom and gloom” is a profit center for the media, there is reason for concern but also reason for hope.
That hope resides in each of us as individuals. Evil can only exist if good men do nothing. Every good or bad thing that has ever come to the world began with one person who decided to do something. One is a powerful number. The helping hand we need for world woes does not lie with government or others, it is right at the end of our own arm.
Yes, everyth ...

What Is A Herniated Disc, How Is It Different From A Bulging Disc, And What You Can Do About It?
So what in the world is a Herniated Disc??? Well, rather than confuse you more, I am going to give you my simple, easy to understand definition… a herniated disc is simply a protrusion, or sticking out of the disc. Think of a disc as a balloon being held in place between your hands… if you push your hands together unevenly the balloon will bulge out on the opposite side. This is what happens to the disc between the vertebrae. A Bulging Disc is the same thing as a herniated disc… just a different name. Herniated discs are probably one of the most common diagnosis’s for back pain ...
