  • The future of the Human Species - Part 3: How do we engineer an Earth-like environment?
The process of making an unearthly world more earth-like for the purpose of supporting human life is called teraforming - Steven Wintergerst.

Teraforming Mars is the only way we, humans can live and reproduce thus starting all over again on the red planet. As stated above, teraforming transforms any world unlike Earth into an inhabitable place for humans. Of course we cannot convert another planet, Mars for example, 100% into Earth. However Mars must resemble Earth in the following aspects:
1.Thicken the small existing atmosphere and make it comprise the important gases required for ...

Messing around with a mother’s DNA or the DNA of her baby is one of the things that can lead to a miscarriage and birth defects. DNA tells the baby AND the mother “when to do what”. Need a leg? Then you need some specific event at some specific time. If the part of the DNA that controls legs is either damaged or altered by some environmental chemical, the leg won’t be there. And you can’t add it later. It can only develop at one very specific time.

  • Imagine Having $42,000,000 You Can’t Spend!
Which lesson would you draw from this?

“Crime doesn’t pay?” or “Murphy strikes again?”

Here’s a story that could be fiction if it wasn’t true.

On Sunday, December 19, 2004, a gang of Belfast, Northern
Ireland, robbers initiated a daring 24-hour plan to rob the
    Northern Bank.

While holding family members of two executives hostage, they
made off with the staggering sum of $42,000,000. According to
the Guinness Book of World Records, this heist rates fourth on
the all-time list and first for a peacetime haul of currency
    alone.

    Science and Technology

"Fifteen years ago, scientists heralded gene therapy as a medical revolution that would quickly bring cures for crippling and deadly diseases. After more than 900 clinical trials, however, gene scientists can claim few real successes, and even the technology's longtime supporters say gene therapy has developed far more slowly than they had expected. 'Everybody realizes that using a gene as a drug is a good idea,' says Ronald Crystal, chairman of genetic medicine at Cornell University's Weill Medical College. 'The difficulty is making it work.' Experts say the story of the treatment of 10 sick children at a Paris hospital, which made news in March, illustrates the technology's promise as well as its challenges. The boys were born with a rare and lethal genetic disorder that left them without working immune systems." Learn more in USA Today.

  • Wake-Up Call

Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 7, 2002

In the first half of May, I went through two remarkable changes. One was physical and the other involved emotional recall.

The physical one was what I thought was flu and a heavy dose of it. It was accompanied by a surreal shivering never experienced before or since. The recall was of a family I knew in my school days more than 20 years ago.

I imagined them not during the school years, when I knew them, but much earlier. I got images of all three children as handsome creatures having just come into this world. I saw t ...
