New Energy Bill: Reducing Our Dependence on Foreign Oil
The U. S. economy is feeling the brunt of skyrocketing oil prices as the nation’s dependence on foreign oil continues to grow. We need a responsible energy plan to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. President Bush and Senator Kerry appear to be skirting the real issues involved. Growing transportation requirements combined with declining domestic oil production have led to burgeoning oil imports. Rising oil prices are having an adverse impact on the U.S. economy as evident from recent economic data and stock market performance. We need a responsible energy plan which will balance ...

The Institute for the Study of Aging: New Web Resource Launched to Boost Development of Alzheimer's Drugs
NEW YORK, NY (MARKET WIRE) There was a time when university professors and small companies could leave the complex challenges of drug discovery entirely up to the pharmaceutical industry. But no longer. In the wake of the revolutions in molecular biology, genetic engineering and other fields related to biomedicine, academe is becoming the crucible for discovering novel disease mechanisms and treatments. But most professors are not
Gene therapy and genetic engineering: the future of medicine?
Is gene therapy the next wave in medicine? As the age of chemical-based medicine is now thoroughly discredited (prescription drugs are toxic, haven't you heard?), and drug companies are losing both profits and credibility, there's a mad dash to find something to replace the current drug racket. Could...
Hidden Genetic Engineering
New Zealand genetic engineer Tony Conner claims to have developed a new genetic engineering technique which by using vectors based on the DNA of the target crop does not involve the transfer of foreign DNA (such as the widely used Cauliflower Mosaic Virus). Conner claims that plants produced using this technique "are, by definition, not transgenic", despite the fact that they have been genetically engineered. He says this would, in the case of some countries, move them outside the regulations intended to control the release of GM plants and that "this means the compliance costs involved in gaining approval for commercial use are minimised." he also says it would make...

Beauty Today: All Smoke and Mirrors?
Did you ever notice that the bar is continually being raised on exactly what physical characteristics define beauty? As I sit in front of the TV, I am bombarded by beauties with pouty lips, perfect bone structure, flawless skin, more "voluptuous" upper regions, size 2 waists, and hair that resembles spun silk. Take these same beauties and plop them back in time 20-30 years, when the advent of modern cosmetic technology had not even begun to reach its full potential. Do you think they would have had those same attributes you find yourself longing for when faced with these image ...

DNA Profiling: Its Uses in Court
Stronger evidence in courtrooms—it’s what every attorney, defendant, and plaintiff dreams of. Beginning in the last 1980s, this is exactly what began to surface through DNA profiling.
In addition to the one-of-a-kind pattern engraved on our fingers, each of us possesses a unique identifier that is built within our bodies. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic blueprint that determines our biological characteristics. DNA is a long molecule located in almost every cell in the human body. When we are conceived, we inherit half of our DNA from our mother and half from our fat ...
