  • Obesity & it's relationship to Anoraxia, Bulimia and other eating disorders.
Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, and women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960’s.

But what is obesity? Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but that’s not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, ...

  • Are Things Hopeless?
On its face, judging from what we get in the media, it would seem our world is spiraling into the abyss. Putting aside that “doom and gloom” is a profit center for the media, there is reason for concern but also reason for hope.

That hope resides in each of us as individuals. Evil can only exist if good men do nothing. Every good or bad thing that has ever come to the world began with one person who decided to do something. One is a powerful number. The helping hand we need for world woes does not lie with government or others, it is right at the end of our own arm.

  • Could You Have an Identical Twin?

I am not a twin myself, but if I were I would definitely want to be an identical twin. There is just something amazing about having someone else in the world with my exact DNA, down to the last amino acid. Most people think of twins as being either identical or fraternal, but there are many different types of twins.

Identical Twin - Identical twins are born when a fertilized egg, or zygote, splits in two. Because the egg is fertilized by one sperm cell, and it is the sperm cell that determines the sex of the child, identical twins are always the same sex.

    The two children ...

    Genetics News:

    On Double-Strand Breaks In DNA
From details of the recent Fanconi anemia research and insight into DNA repair, it is interesting to note that "We have known for decades that patients with Fanconi anemia have chromosomes that break easily ... we can now suggest that DNA double-strand breaks are the lesions that underlie the pathology of this disease." Digging into past material at Fight Aging!, we find "DNA double strand breaks are regarded as one of the primary causes of cancer." If you're of a scientific mindset, you should find the first and second parts of a conversation on aging theories between Robert Bradbury, Aubrey de Grey and Joao Magalhaes to be relevant and interesting: "DNA double strand breaks are bad." DNA Repair Genes Make Lung Cancer Cells Resist Radiotherapy
"Radiotherapy has played a key role in the control of tumor growth in many cancer patients. It is usually difficult to determine what fraction of the tumor cell population is radioresistant after a course of radiotherapy," researchers in People's Republic of China report. "The response of tumor cells to radiation is believed to be accompanied by complex changes in the gene expression pattern. It may be possible to use these to sensitize radioresistant tumor cells and improve radiocurability. Based on the biological effects of ionizing radiation, in the present study, we developed one oligonucleotide microarray to analyze the expression of 143 genes in cells of two lung cancer cell lines with different radiosensitivities," W.F. Guo and...

[Article] Functionality of Human Thymine DNA Glycosylase Requires SUMO-Regulated Changes in Protein Conformation
By Roland Steinacher, and Primo Sch'r. Background: Base excision repair initiated by human thymine-DNA glycosylase (TDG) results in the generation of abasic sites (AP sites) in DNA. TDG remains bound to this unstable repair intermediate, indicating that its transmission to the downstream-acting AP endonuclease is a coordinated process. Previously, we established that posttranslational modification of TDG with Small Ubiquitin-like MOdifiers (SUMOs) facilitates the dissociation of the DNA glycosylase from the product AP site, but the underlying molecular mechanism remained unclear.

    DNA Repair Kit Developed
California scientists have developed a molecular repair kit that corrects mutations in a cell's DNA. The researchers with Sangamo BioSciences Inc. focused on tiny proteins called zinc fingers, which are made naturally by virtually all living organisms, the Washington Post reported Monday.

New understanding of DNA repair may pave way to cancer treatments
A Burnham Institute study has found that a protein known for its role in gene regulation has another important function, that of initiating DNA repair.

  • Human Motion, Walking, Running and Gait for Identification

Identifying a human gait, walking patterns, running exists. Can such records be of value? Many think so. Why is this so important? Well every time Bin Laden is on TV no one knows if it is real or not. You cannot take a DNA sample, no retina scanning, fingerprints, well then facial recognition? Harder on video tapes at only one angle. Some ones gait could be viewed and downloaded by a sniper to decide if this is the correct target, although chances are it is best to kill all the doubles anyway, the fewer they have the closer you are to the primary targets.

We can certainly thank the mo ...

  • Understanding Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is a genetic condition that is caused by an inability to digest gluten. Hence the reason that this disease is also known as gluten intolerance. It appears that genetics predispose some people to coeliac disease. For these people, some of the constituents of proteins found in wheat, in gluten and gliadin, become toxic to the lining of the stomach.
The condition is often diagnosed in childhood after weaning when cereals are introduced into the diet, although it can be diagnosed at any age. The symptoms can be subtle, and you may feel unwell for no reason for some time before t ...

  • RFID: A Smart Tag Primer
Good things come in small packages. This familiar cliché usually refers to precious stones, but today it's taken on new meaning, in that small things are now protecting items we deem valuable.

Analysts estimate that the retail industry loses US $50B a year to theft and up to ten times that much to counterfeiting. High-end products such as cosmetics, fragrances and pharmaceuticals are most likely to be stolen or counterfeited. Many retailers and manufacturers believe that this big problem may have a tiny solution – RFID smart tags.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an autom ...
