    http://www.plagiarism.org and http://www.Turnitin.com

Latin kidnapped the word "plagion" from ancient Greek and it ended up in English as "plagiarism". It literally means "to kidnap" - most commonly, to misappropriate content and wrongly attribute it to oneself. It is a close kin of piracy. But while the software or content pirate does not bother to hide or alter the identity of the content's creator or the software's author - the plagiarist does. Plagiarism is, therefore, more pernicious than piracy.

    Genetics News:

DNA-BAR: distinguisher selection for DNA barcoding.
Publication Date: 2005 Aug 15 PMID: 15961439Authors: DasGupta, B. - Konwar, K. M. - Mandoiu, I. I. - Shvartsman, A. A.Journal: BioinformaticsDNA-BAR is a software package for selecting DNA probes (henceforth referred to as distinguishers) that can be used in genomic-based identification of microorganisms. Given the genomic sequences of the microorganisms, DNA-BAR finds a near-minimum number of distinguishers yielding a distinct hybridization pattern for each microorganism. Selected distinguishers satisfy user specified bounds on length, melting temperature and GC content, as well as redundancy and cross-hybridization constraints.

Forensics, DNA Fingerprinting and Human Origins - Naked Scientists 05.12.04
This week we take a foray into forensics, as DI Alan Cook talks about how DNA is used to solve crime, Alec Jeffreys helps us brush up on how DNA fingerprinting works, Tamsin O'Connell describes how DNA can help track down human origins, and in Kitchen Science we have a live DNA fingerprinting race in which schools battle it out to discover which of the Naked Scientists is the foul footed felon with the criminally smelly feet.

  • Fantasy Football Explodes into Fiction

Fifteen years ago, my friends and I wanted to get involved in fantasy sports. We had heard of Rotisserie baseball, the game where you select major leaguers and use their statistics for your own fantasy team. Most of us preferred football over baseball, so we did a little research and decided to create a fantasy football league. Now, we're entering our 16th season, with 20 of the most rabid football nuts anywhere, competing for pride and a small monetary prize each year.

We're not alone, of course. Over 15 million Americans play fantasy football, a game that uses the statistics of prof ...

  • Movie Review - Cellular
Cellular - 2005 New Line Productions Inc.

I had a chance to watch Cellular the other day and my first thought was that here we go with another spin-off of Phone Booth, another movie with someone forced to stay on the phone for 90 some minutes while we cringe in our seat. But, to my surprise , this was actually a very enjoyable movie. I’m am not really sure what genre to classify this movie in because it has it all. Suspense, drama, action, comic relief; this movie has everything.
The movie begins with the kidnapping of Jessica Martin, played by Kim Bassinger.
Jessica is a high sch ...

    - the affliction known as cellulite. We all have it to varying degrees,
and it seems to get worse as we get older in many cases. So, should we
just resign ourselves to the fact that it is here to stay, or is there a way to fight and get rid of cellulite?

Thankfully, the answer is yes, we can fight cellulite, or at least the
