  • DNAology!
The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a unique molecule. It contains every single piece of genetic information of a person; just like the memory card of a PC, which contains all the data. The major difference between the DNA and the memory card of your PC though is that the microscopic DNA helix can store more data – actually about a thousand times more. So, scientists have got the bright idea of mimicking the DNA’s data-storage secrets for use on your PC’s memory card. This will lead to a more compact data processing and storage circuitry.

  • Remote Control Bacteria; We Can Not Allow That.

Remote Control Bacteria. Why not, we have remote control everything. Controlling RNA, DNA, Proteins and enzymes. By turning on and off the Riboswitches:

Scientists are learning ways to turn off and on Bacteria too by switching proteins on and off. Well this is incredible and brings us closer to the idea of Matrix II, where human beings are and all species are living a computer program. Kind of Science Fictionish. It is such a great period to be alive and rivals the Renaissance and or Roman and Greek periods. We are fin ...

  • The Honeybush Miracle

Perhaps a little eclipsed by the world-wide success of Rooibos, another natural South African health tea, Honeybush; is finally getting the attention it deserves.

Honeybush tea ( botanical name: Cyclopia intermedia ) grows along mountain slopes in the Cedarberg and Langkloof area, and has a naturally sweet, almost honey-like taste. Its brewing colour is a pinky red. South Africa produces only 200 tons of Honeybush tea per year. Not much when compared to the annual Rooibos tea crop of around 4000 tons. This lesser known tea has, however, apparently plenty to offer.

    Just like the ...

Hello Kitty, Hello Clone - New York Times
Hello Kitty, Hello Clone - New York Times. Hello Kitty, Hello CloneBy ANNE EISENBERG, Published: May 28, 2005 Ordinarily it is hard to predict how a kitten will look when it is grown. But not for David Cheng, who plans to buy a clone of his much-loved short-haired black-and-white cat Shadow. After all, the cloning company guarantees that Shadow's successor will bear a close resemblance. When Mr. Cheng, who works as a technology auditor for a Wall Street investment bank, discovered that Shadow had a tumor that would soon prove fatal, he had the cat's cells saved, cultured and frozen....

    Snuppy, the Cloned Puppie
Seoul National University unveiled Snuppy, the Afghan hound - the first canine to be cloned. Snuppy, a name that draws from the university's initials, was born from a yellow Labrador retriever. He is now 13 weeks old and bears the same DNA as an older hound whose ear cells were used in the cloning.  This represents a major breakthrough in cloning and science at large because: - Snuppy was the only survivor of 1,095 cloned embryos implanted in 123 dogs. - The dog is physiologically very close to a human: the dog has as many as 203 genes that can be used as disease models for human being. In comparison, the same totals are just 65 for the pig and 123 for the cat.

  • Death, Aging, Rejuvenation (Part 2)

    Death

Death. Why it happens? Why do we die? Why do animals die? Why do plants die? What is the need of this? In my opinion mechanism of death was selected during Evolution.

From the position of Darwin's theory of Natural Selection everything, that benefits survival of species and gives advantage in Natural Selection, is preserved in following generations.

Improvements were often left unchanged from the moment of life appearance. Though there could be other ways, certain mechanisms were accidentally selected. These improvements are reproduced in the genome of more complex s ...

  • The Measurement Problem in Quantum Mechanics
Arguably the most intractable philosophical question attached to Quantum Mechanics (QM) is that of Measurement. The accepted (a.k.a. Copenhagen) Interpretation of QM says that the very act of sentient measurement determines the outcome of the measurement in the quantum (microcosmic) realm. The wave function (which describes the co-existing, superpositioned, states of the system) "collapses" following an act of measurement.

It seems that just by knowing the results of a measurement we determine its outcome, determine the state of the system and, by implication, the state of the Universe ...
