  • The Technology of Law
One can discern the following relationships between the Law and Technology:

    1. Sometimes technology becomes an inseparable part of the law. In extreme cases, technology itself becomes the law. The use of polygraphs, faxes, telephones, video, audio and computers is an integral part of many laws - etched into them. It is not an artificial co-habitation: the technology is precisely defined in the law and forms a CONDITION within it. In other words: the very spirit and letter of the law is violated (the law is broken) if a certain technology is not employed or not put to correct use. Think ...

  • Sheep Have Been Cloned...Are Humans Next?
Do you enjoy watching forensic science shows like CSI? Are you interested in genetics and the intricacies of DNA? Genetic engineering that deals with the human genome and DNA has become a hot bed for discussion in recent years. Advancements in forensic science have helped law enforcement to nab criminals and solve previous “cold” cases. Understanding the components of the human body and human nature is valuable information that is a welcome notion of safety for most.

While many would agree that using DNA as evidence is a good idea, manipulating human genetics is another issue. Cloning h ...

  • Hazing: Child Play or Violent Crime?
On a startling Court TV program, Al Roker investigated the horrors of 'hazing' reportedly not only in College sororities and fraternities, but even in high schools across the country. The program was extremely revealing and shocking as it provided a weatlh of information regarding so-called Greek 'hazing' rituals carried out across this Nation. Unfortunately, hazing is a predominant force among colleges, schools, military and even church groups, that it is blatantly out of control. Often, supposed 'leaders' or participants of ...

Nisi Shawl to read Friday in Seattle

Residents of the Puget Sound region might want to attend a reading by Nisi Shawl at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, at the main branch of the University Bookstore; according to the press release titled "Escaping Slavery: Science Fiction Fugitives": "Up-and-coming African American author Nisi Shawl shares science fiction stories inspired by the Underground Railroad, including excerpts from her forthcoming novel The Blazing World. Shawl's evocative language and piercing eye make vividly real the connections between human cloning, genetic engineering, and the history and future of human enslavement in the Americas. "Matched," a short story based on the novel, is available online. [...] The University Bookstore's main branch is at 4326 University Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105 [...] This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle."

Can we influence the future, or is it pre-determined?

I've been getting more involved with The da Vinci Institute (they're a sponsor for my upcoming Blog Smart! Business Blogging Workshop) and last night I had dinner with Thomas Frey, the head of the Institute. We had a fascinating and quite compelling discussion about how what we do today can influence the future, and I've been thinking about that ever since. I believe that our society promotes a sort of helpless inevitability about the future, particularly with technology and innovation, a sort of "ceaseless march of progress" that's embodied in Bill Joy's famous dictum that "privacy is dead. deal with it." I'll call this the Inevitable Future. Whatever's going to happen is going to happen, be it human cloning, dirty...

  • The News at Meucci Appaloosa Horse Ranch
We’re back from the 2005 nationals, held in Oklahoma City. We were competing, as usual, in only Open Halter Events. Our entries on July 7th and 8th were weanling colts, weanling fillies, yearling mares, and two-year-old mares. We were victorious garnering four top tens in large classes. These classes represented the culmination of the best breeding programs built on the best efforts of horsemen and women since this breed’s conception. These horses proudly carry the genetics and baton of inspiration for the future as a breed.

Not everyone rehearses their losses. Embarrassingly, it was no ...
