  • Could You Have an Identical Twin?

I am not a twin myself, but if I were I would definitely want to be an identical twin. There is just something amazing about having someone else in the world with my exact DNA, down to the last amino acid. Most people think of twins as being either identical or fraternal, but there are many different types of twins.

Identical Twin - Identical twins are born when a fertilized egg, or zygote, splits in two. Because the egg is fertilized by one sperm cell, and it is the sperm cell that determines the sex of the child, identical twins are always the same sex.

    The two children ...

  • What is a herniated disc and what can you do about it?
So what in the world is a Herniated Disc??? Well, rather than confuse you more, I am going to give you my simple, easy to understand definition…

a herniated disc is simply a protrusion, or sticking out of the disc. Think of a disc as a balloon being held in place between your hands… if you push your hands together unevenly the balloon will bulge out on the opposite side. This is what happens to the disc between the vertebrae.

A Bulging Disc is the same thing as a herniated disc… just a different name.

Herniated discs are probably one of the most common diagnosis’s for back ...

  • DNA Testing - Are You Raising Someone Else's Child?
Paternity Testing – Are you raising someone else’s child?

Back in the 1700s, the best way to determine paternity was by a good hard look at the child, followed by a good hard look at the father. Enough coincidences and maybe a relationship could be proposed. A hundred years later, eye colour was discovered to be a paternity identifier. This theory has had its flaws exposed because of recent DNA advances. We now know that eye colour is determined by at least six alleles, or genetic markers. Paternity testing has become a lot easier and affordable over the past few years due to advances in DN ...

    Treatments for Aspartylglucosaminuria (AGU)
Aspartylglycosaminuria is a rare genetic disorder mainly affecting those of Finnish decent, belonging to a group of disorders called Lysosomal Storage Diseases. Lysosomes are particles containing enzymes needed to break down large molecules in the body. This disorder is caused by a deficient lysosomal enzyme called aspartylglycosamidase, which builds up in the body. The gene that causes this deficiency is located on the long arm of chromosome 4.

  • A Dash of Cinnamon, A Pinch of the Past, A Smidgen of the Future

Close your eyes and remember December, the smell of cinnamon in your mother's or grandmother's kitchen and the warm scent of dough baking in the oven. Imagine opening the oven door and, with assistance, taking out the heated cookie sheet. Devour the cookies, small works of art, with your eyes: Fudge Brownies, Gingerbread, Nut Rolls, Painted Cookies, Sugar Cookies... With each bite, taste your childhood and family history. You can trace your blood and traditions not by DNA, genealogies and family heirlooms, but by recipes given from one generation to the next, like oral histories handed down ...

  • Understanding Nutrition
With the release of the new dietary guidelines, in the form of the new food pyramid, I still find that many people don't actually understand what nutrition actually means. Because of this, dietary choices can seem overwhelming. Even greater confusion can be generated by prime time news specials which only strive to educate through clever sound-bites and diet fads which lead some to believe that all of their answers are found in one single "magic food." So what is nutrition and how can you understand it in a way that helps you apply it to your life and to the benefit of those you know and love? ...
