  • Sun Safety
The sun is an important part of our lives. Exposure to the sun allows our bodies to produce Vitamin D which is needed to help absorb calcium for strong healthy bones. Generally, we get 50-80% of our sun exposure by the time we reach age 18, therefore, it is important that parents teach children how to stay in the sun safely.

Try to avoid prolonged periods in the sun when its at its highest in the sky. This is the time the sun can do the most damage to your skin. In the United States, that is generally between 10am and 4pm. If you are out during this period, make sure you are protected w ...

  • Protein - The Denominator Customary to All Diets

The Human Body is in a constant flux with the environment. Matter and molecules flow in and out, casting themselves into its complexities. Although the body lends them structure, it is the intake—the diet—that decides its physique. To control what goes in a diet is to choose what stays inside. Dietary decisions reflect an awareness of metabolism and the nutrients needed to modify it. There may be a host of diets purported for each activity and illness. However, the one macronutrient that is invariably required, in substantial amounts irrespective of the physiological state, is protein.

  • What Makes a “Good” Foot?
Spring has arrived and you’re probably thinking about trail rides, shows and other fun riding events. If you’ve had your horse turned out all winter and are just getting him ready for the riding season, you may want to pay extra attention to how his feet are doing. New research suggests that while genetics play some part in determining how good your horse’s feet are, exercise and environment are just as important. Research by Robert M. Bowker, VMD, PhD indicates that most horses have similar hoof development up to four years of age, but after that, exercise and environment are the key factors ...

Awakening gene therapy with Sleeping Beauty transposons.
Publication Date: 2005 Aug 3 PMID: 16084771Authors: Essner, J. J. - McIvor, R. S. - Hackett, P. B.Journal: Curr Opin PharmacolSleeping Beauty transposons have the potential for use as chromosome-integrating vectors for non-viral gene therapy. Recent preclinical data from mouse models for human genetic disorders have shown efficacy for the Sleeping Beauty transposon system in the treatment of hemophilia, tyrosinemia type I, junctional epidermolysis bullosa and type 1 diabetes. Methods have also been developed to deliver Sleeping Beauty transposons to the lung, liver and tumors for treatments for cystic fibrosis, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and cancer. Recent studies characterizing site selection for integration and insertional mutagenesis indicate that the Sleeping Beauty transposon system may be a safer alternative than viral approaches for gene therapy.

  • Eating Disorders Do Not Discriminate

    Who suffers from Eating Disorders?

Eating Disorder sufferers are male and female alike. We are of all ethnicity's, religions, and economic backgrounds. We are of all ages, with very different body structures. We can look normal on the outside and yet be suffering terribly on the inside.

Genetics, Psychology, and Media all influence the onset of an eating disorder. Once we get caught in the cycle, some days it seems as though we will never break free. We constantly beat ourselves up, every moment of every hour of every day. If we could just be perfect in some way then we would be o ...

  • Science and Religion (Part 1)
Could life have evolved by accident? Are we alone in the universe? These are the questions which have pounded the consciousness of individuals. Plus this no less persistent question: what is the purpose of life? Dinosaurs have come and gone. Modern man—Homo sapiens—has landed on the moon. Satellites map our solar system. New planets are being discovered on a regular basis. New theories proposed. Old ones discredited. Genetics, a new field of study—though not so new—ready to re-invent this singular species: mankind. Men of science and of faith are no further apart as a test tube from a pulpit. ...
